I'm Clearly the Best Candidate--So Why Am I Not Getting the Job?

Dear Evil HR Lady,

I heard that 85% of the time it’s not the most qualified candidate that gets the job. I’m still searching for that 15% job.

I’m an Accountant. Not to toot my own horn but I’m kinda good at it. I’m considered extremely intelligent, however my social graces aren’t up to par. I’m usually well liked and I do impeccable work.

I’m doing something wrong in the interviews. I’ve been a finalist a few times now but not gotten the job. Sadly, I used to be good at interviewing.

So as to not go on too long and bore you I’ll just say while society has become “super positive”, pretentious (in my view anyways) and from what I’ve found and been told “game players”. In other words, you’ve got to play the game. It seems like, and according to one source, it doesn’t matter if you can do the job but can you tell them what they want to hear.

Anyways, if nothing else you could tell me a couple of great subject lines to use.

What does the culture of the organizations seem like? Do the organizations have "super positive" cultures? Perhaps they are looking more for someone who matches their culture -- it is important for keeping the existing employees happy.
The current movement in organizational cultures is toward a more open, transparent atmosphere that centers around team work.

Maybe this applicant shouldn't be so boldly arrogant. There is fine line between expressing your talents and sounding cocky about what you have to offer. Let the interviewer know that you are prepared to learn and expand your accounting knowledge.

I understand exactly what you mean when you say that you are the best qualified and still are not able to get the job. I have been in that situation one time before becuase I was the more experienced and still was not offered the job, but the job was given to someone who had no experience and had just graduated from nursing school. I guess it is sometimes who you know and not what you know.

There is the world of reality and the ideal.Idealy you may be good for the job but practically you may not be the best fit for the organization. Most times companies would like to employ those whom they know directly or through others prefeably their employee refered. So if you are competing against one less qualified than you but has been refered by their employee or friend he/she snatches the job but keep trying one day you will knock the right door and you can make your own niche.
