A Confession and a Poll

On Friday night I had a delightful conversation with Jared from Human Resource Executive Online. He asked me what HR blogs I read regularly and I had to (gulp!) confess that I don't read too many of them. It's not because I don't love you all (I do! I really do!) it's just that discussing the nuances of the implication of card check legislation makes me feel like I'm on a tedious conference call at work.

But, I realize that most of you are much more entertaining and informative than that. I read Ask a Manager, Clue Wagon and US News' On Careers regularly. The blogs in my sidebar are looked at from time to time. But what else should I be reading every day? (Or as often as they post?)

Jared also asked me who my readers were and I had to confess that I didn't know. I mean, I know who comments, but I have a lot more hits than I do comments, so I don't know who everyone is. He wondered if they tended to be other HR folks or just normal humans. I wonder too, so take a few seconds and respond to this poll. Then we'll know!

Hi Evil HR Lady,
Like you, the last thing I want to do is spend all my free time thinking about work, however, there are so many fun HR bloggers out there that don't make it feel like work. My top faves are: www.humanresourcespufnstuf.wordpress.com (great mix of HR & comedy), www.steveboese.squarespace.com (best HR tech & more), www.fistfuloftalent.com (where else can you get Kris Dunn, Tim Sackett, Jessica Lee, Paul Hebert, and more??) and of course www.punkrockhr.com (always insightful and direct). I also highly recommend www.upstarthr.com (up & coming HR pro with a fresh look at old HR).

Of course, I think you should read mine too- www.hrringleader.wordpress.com.
:-)

Thanks and keep up the great posts!
Trish

I haven't been commenting of late but I read regularly... just to see what you evil HR people are upto :)

No, seriously - I like the way you write - sane advice but such evil humour!

Hey, EHRL! Trish beat me to recommending her, but I'll do it anyway. :-) I also recommend http://knowhr.com and http://renegadehr.net

Both Frank and Chris write plain spoken, yet brilliant, blogs.

I voted that I work in HR, but should note that I am on the HRIS side of the world, so not actually on the frontlines the way "real" HR workers are.

Thanks Evil HR Lady for your interview. I'm sure our readers will enjoy your perspective.

I have to admit you are the only HR blog I read. You are very entertaining. Your title caught my attention one day. I often feel like an evil HR lady myself so I can relate. I will have to check out some of these other blogs. I mostly blog and read blogs for personal stuff and not much work related.

Holy crap. This is the very first HR blog I ever read (I hadn't even heard of a blog before that), and it's still one of my favorites...so I'm blown away that YOU are reading MY stuff. Thank you.

You are the first HR blog that I read and it's because of your blog that I found other great bloggers like Kerry and AskAManager. I love the way you write. It always makes me laugh one way or the other!

Dear EvilHRLady

Here's a link for you - food for thought.

A suggestion that we should eliminate traditional performance reviews.

hello!
i have only commented maybe twice on this blog but i LOVE your writing style EHRL and your wicked sense of humor. I am not in HR at all (and if you saw the HR department where i work you'd see why!!) but i find your blog to be very informative (better than where i work!)and funny as well.

glad to see that being in Switzerland has not kept you from continuing to write about HR matters =-)

Hi EHRL! I started reading your blog because I read your sister's blog and thought your comments were funny -- then I went to Egypt with your parents (because it really is a small world) and they spoke so highly of you (you'll be pleased to know).

I happen to work in HR and your blog got me interested in the department I'm in (I got the job as an assistant and just happened to be in HR). I love your wit. Nearly every time you update I have to send the link to all of my coworkers because it's useful AND fun.

I'm not in HR but read your blog for the high level of humor! I've managed people for a Fortune 50, and I think I've hired/fired/dealt with so many of these people. I try not to manage people any more...

I went with "Other", but not to be difficult. I usually read your blog at least once a week, sometimes more sometimes less. I don't officially work in an HR department, but I manage a really small business, so I do HR-type things like hiring and firing and payroll and dealing with employee issues. Yours is the only HR blog I read on any sort of a regular basis.

Hi EHRL!

Just wanted you to know that you have students of HR reading too! And even though the legislation is different here in Canada, the vast majority of what you have to say applies here too.

At our school we have the Human Resources Interscholastic Committee (HRIC), of which I am treasurer, that meets every Wednesday and I plan to recommend that my peers start to read your blog. I find what you have to say honest, insightful, and funny.

Thank you for blogging about HR. It gives me a better idea of what I'm in for!

Hi EHRL - I'm an HR pro, and keep a list that I check regularly...I use Bloglines to let me know when something new has been posted. Totally agree with previous posters re. other HR blogs; I also check out The HR Capitalist (http://www.hrcapitalist.com/), as well as Boolean Black Belt (http://www.booleanblackbelt.com/), which has some really cool tips and tricks for recruiting. I love your blog, and push it out to friends/coworkers on Facebook and LinkedIn. Keep up the great work!

My first post...

I don't think the poll capture all the options. I don't read you twice a week, but I certainly read you more than once a month.

Also, some other blogs: HRBartender, HRMorning, and KnowHR

Not in and never have been in HR but I like reading this blog. I always comment Anonymously though. But my comments are never ugly, I promise!

I read often, though not every week. It's more or less like I visit and read the posts in bulk. I have enjoyed the case-let formats and the solutions you come up with. Though I may disagree at times.

Largely your blog has been an inspiration to start writing on my own @ http://hrvigilance.blogspot.com/

Cheers to you and your work!
