You realize that McDonalds turned down 950,000 people a few months ago during a hiring binge, right? I don't think is as much of a problem as you think it is.

Right now, in many companies, the main job of a recruiter is to reject applications, not to search out candidates.

Don't know if this posted or not previously. I think most recruiters (not just now) are in the business of rejecting applications. I tell my students and alumni (I'm in college career counseling) that the first part of the resume reviewers job is to CUT DOWN THE PILE, not be creative in keeping people under consideration. Ergo, their application materials should be specific and targeted to the position/field. I get that not all companies are like this, but I suspect most of them are.
